Thanks to the DC Comics Downloads page, I have myself a nifty new Planetary desktop background, based on one of my favorite comic cover images:

I've been walking by this all week -- it is outside the Bronx Central Post Office, which is between my subway stop and school -- and today I finally remembered "Hey, I have a camera in my cellphone!" So I took a picture.

I'm looking into car rental options and was wondering which sounds like the better option to the locals?

1) Plan to return the car on the Friday when we get into Edinburgh, which would likely mean leaving it at the airport and taking buses to (on Friday) and from (on Sunday) the city, but would mean not having to park it in town

-OR-

2) Plan to return it on Sunday morning right before we go and check in for our flight back to London (and NY), which would mean dealing with parking in town for the weekend.

Basically, I was wondering if parking is problematic and if keeping the car really saves much hassle in the way of getting back to the airport Sunday a.m. when compared with bus options.

The latest Callum Robbins Benefit concert to be announced is a doozy: The Dismemberment Plan at the Black Cat, April 28th. Tickets go on sale at 5pm tonight (according to Ticketmaster, at least).

Goddamn! It has been a while since I visited DC....

ETA: hmmm...I just got home from work (7pm) and discovered the show is already sold out. Anyone happen to get tickets?

Yesterday I actually got to use the word "eaves" in a NY Times crossword.

And the last two crosswords I've done (not actually from consecutive dates) have both mentioned Phil Ochs.

Two cocktails for this evening. The first features blue curacao, which is basically triple sec with blue coloring added. In old school (i.e. nearly 100 year old) cocktail books, people would use Cointreau and "blue vegetable extract". Now we have all the coloring business taken care of for us.

Anyway, we picked a bottle up with the idea of working on some Qarth-themed cocktails (which I will no doubt whisper "I'm so sorry" before serving) for World Fantasy in November, and our first taste of it came in a cocktail from Harry Craddock, the author of "The Savoy Cocktail Book":

The Blue Train
  • 1 1/2 oz. gin
  • 1 oz. blue curacao
  • 1/2 oz. lemon juice
Shake with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Enjoy.

And our other cocktail comes as a reminder that it is indeed blood orange season, which means you can make a proper Fire And Blood cocktail:

Fire And Blood
  • 1 oz. gin
  • 1/2 oz. Cointreau
  • 1/2 oz. sweet vermouth
  • 1/2 oz. Campari
  • 1 1/2 oz. blood orange juice
Shake well and strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with a flamed orange peel.

Page of the Week. It's from the "Order of the Science Scouts of Exemplary Repute and Above Average Physique," based in British Columbia. The page has a list of Boy Scout style merit badges for all sorts of nerdtastic achievements. There are certainly many deserving winners of various badges on my FL. Mayhap I'll make a list later.

My favorite, naturally, is the "I Will Crush You With My Math Prowess" badge:
