As the subject says, these are my 5 favorite songs of the moment. With YouTube links, where I could find them.
1. Band Of Horses - "St. Augustine". After school and soccer on Friday, I went out with one of the English teachers to an Irish pub (there's a Morrissey joke in there somewhere) he regularly frequents. Note to self: when intending to go out for one beer on the way home, do not go to bars where your friend is a regular. Four pints and a shot of whiskey (courtesy of the bartender) later, I headed off to the subway and stopped by a record shop on the way. I had been intending to pick up Everything All The Time by Band Of Horses based on the strength of a series of good reviews, but I couldn't find it in the racks. I asked the gentleman behind the counter and he ended up selling me the promo copy they had used for in-store play, complete with a 50% discount. That night was the first time I heard "St. Augustine" (it's the closing track) and I've been singing it to myself ever since. (BTW, the video is for a different song.)
2. Arcade Fire - "In The Back Seat". The closing song from Funeral. Builds really nicely and culminates in the band at full-volume backing up wordless vocals.
3. Stars - "Calendar Girl". Another album closer, from Set Yourself On Fire. This is another song where one verse (the middle one, which begins with "I dreamed I was dying as I so often do") popped into my head a couple weeks ago (at WorldCon, for whatever that's worth) and has been stuck there ever since.
4. Matt Curreri & The Ex-Friends - "From Picked On To President". The theme of this list is turning into "Album Closers". This is the last track of their new album, Exercise Music For The Lonely. I'm glad Matt finally put this song out after playing it for 4 or 5 years. The last section (i.e. the litany of seasons) is what really makes the song for me. (The link goes to their MySpace page, where you can listen to this song.)
5. Small Factory - "Pretending It's Sunny". Neither an album closer nor a linked song (no videos, no posthumous MySpace page), just a great song. One of the few bands I've seen where the bassist played a mariachi style acoustic bass.
